Julie K. Brown, CSI, CCS, SCIP, principal, was educated at Ventura City College and San Bernardino State College. Ms. Brown has owned her own design/build firm and combines this expertise with her experience on building delivery systems to bring a fresh approach to the services provided by the firm. Ms. Brown holds a Construction Document Technologist Certification from CSI and is a Certified Construction Specifier. Ms. Brown was on the board of Construction Science Research Foundation (CSRF) and was the chair of CSRF’s Technical Review Committee for SPECTEXT® updates. Ms. Brown was on the specification team for the Getty Center for the Arts and Disney Concert Hall, and was lead specifier for Broadway State Office Building using modified-design-build for a half million square foot office renovation, and Capitol East End Office Complex a large modified-design-build project for the State of California, with 1.5 million square feet of new offices on 5 city blocks.
The principal and associates are all members of the Construction Specifications Institute, and of one or more of the following: American Institute of Architects (AIA), Specification Consultants In Independent Practice (SCIP), International Code of Building Officials (ICBO), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Steel Structures Painting Council (SSPC), United States Green Building Council (USGBC), and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

For the Love of Words

I submit the following, which is only but a small start;

LALLY COLUMN - A metal pip filled with concrete used to support beams or girders.

LAMB’S TONGUE - An ornamental curved and tapered fitting terminating a handrail.

NOSING - The part of a stair tread or platform which projects as a square, rounded, or rounded and molded edge beyond the vertical face of the riser below it.

PEE POT - Slang for hard hat. (Construction Industry)

PIG - An air manifold having a number of pipes which distribute compressed air coming through a single large line.














I have always been fascinated by words, because they are as changing as the weather. Their meaning changes not only with time, but depending on which profession uses them. These architectural and construction vocabulary will show there are multiple meanings depending on how and where they are used (social, industry, society, etc.)
